The 'Queen of Pop' is 60 today and has been making hit music since 1982 (a year after Jungle Jim first cut his teeth in the property industry), that's 36 years of success. So love, loath or indifferent to her music, nobody can deny she has stood the test of time incredibly well.
We can ALL learn something from The Material Girl.
No.1 - You're never too old to reinvent yourself.
Madonna is a master at reinvention and has never shied away from stepping outside the box and trying something new. She doesn't wait to catch up with her peers, she leads the way and inspires others.
No.2 - Use technology to improve your performance.
Madonna is not the worlds best songstress (even she will confess to that) so she uses technology such as autotuning to make sure she gives her audience the performance they deserve. Don't be afraid of using technology to enhance your performance too.
No.3 - Ignore the haters.
It's fair to say, Madonna has had more than her fair share of criticism over the decades but she ignores it and moves on. Results are what count, not the opinions of detractors. If you are getting the results you want, you don't need validation from others. Let the proof be in the pudding.
No.4 - Learn from your mistakes.
Nobody is perfect, not even Madonna. Don't dwell on them but use them as a lesson to build on and don't let them knock your confidence. If Madonna had let her early career's film appearances define her ability, she wouldn't still be outselling the likes of Beyonce today.
No.5 - Set by example
One common trait in really successful people is that they always give 110%. Being there and only giving 50% isn't as effective as spending less time on something but giving 110%. Even at 60, Madonna works her backside off in rehearsals for her shows, as she wants to make sure her fans are never disappointed. This not only keeps her at the top of her game, it motivates everyone around her to do better.
No.6 - Look after yourself
Nobody can deny that at 60, Madonna is fitter than the average 20-year-old and has the energy and enthusiasm to match. If you really want to be the best in your area or field, you need to take care of your body and mind. Eat, exercise and sleep well and give yourself time to breathe and relax. Even elite athletes take regular breaks and understand that body and mind need to regenerate to perform at their best.
So if you want to enjoy a long and fruitful career like Madonna (and Jungle Jim), follow The Material Girl's great example.
